Just over a week has passed since the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and I’m truly enjoying my time with this new console. As I mentioned in my review, it’s everything I envisioned in a hybrid device—marking it as an impressive contender among handheld consoles. I’ve already dived into some fantastic early gaming sessions on the Switch 2.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 shines right out of the box, like most gaming consoles, it can be enhanced with a few valuable accessories. The current selection of compatible Switch 2 accessories is somewhat limited but is expected to expand over time. Nevertheless, there are a few extras that I believe are nearly essential for any early adopter.

If you’re one of those early adopters like me, here are the three accessories I’ve tested that have significantly improved my gaming experience. This trio has quickly become a core part of my Nintendo Switch 2 setup.

**3 Essential Nintendo Switch 2 Accessories:**

**Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller**

I was late to the Pro controller game with the original Switch, only picking one up when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched in 2023. However, with the Switch 2, I’ve had a Pro controller from day one, and it might just be one of the best controllers I’ve ever used.

The Switch 2 Pro controller completely outclasses the Joy-Cons housed in the included grip attachment. It feels fantastic in your hands, with satisfying clicky buttons and responsive triggers and sticks. A fantastic upgrade is the addition of back buttons, which have proven to be incredibly useful, especially while racing in Mario Kart World.

Priced at $84, the Pro controller is a bit of an investment, but it makes a noticeable difference if you plan on using your console frequently in TV mode.

Plus, its battery life is stellar. After a week of use, I haven’t needed to charge mine yet, which is a refreshing change compared to the PS5’s DualSense, which often warns of “low battery” after just a couple of sessions.

**Dbrand Killswitch Case**

I’ve been upfront about my love for the Nintendo Switch 2 early on, but if I had to voice a criticism (well, two—battery life could be better), it would be the lack of built-in ergonomic grips found in devices like the Steam Deck OLED.

Holding it in handheld mode for extended periods can be uncomfortable, but this minor issue can be easily remedied with a third-party case. I’ve been using dbrand’s Killswitch case, and the results have impressed me.

The Killswitch adds some much-needed heft, and it consists of three separate parts (two grips for the Joy-Cons and a casing for the console itself). This design allows for easy detachment of the Joy-Cons and keeps the versatility for tabletop mode intact.

The only drawback is that once the case is securely fitted, the Switch 2 won’t fit into the standard dock. However, dbrand has thoughtfully included a Dock Adapter with every order. It’s not the sleekest solution, but it works and is quick to install.

**Samsung MicroSD Express Card**

The Switch 2 has a respectable default storage capacity of 256GB. While that might not seem like much today, given the ever-growing install sizes, Switch 2 titles typically take up less space compared to PS5 or Xbox games.

Even demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 only require around 60GB, but that still eats into your available storage significantly.

Although 256GB may initially seem sufficient, I maxed out my Switch 2’s storage on day one by installing eight games, making an upgrade necessary. I opted for the officially licensed Samsung Express microSD card for $59, which even sports a cute Mario logo.

For those seeking a budget-friendly alternative, the 256GB Express microSD from Onn is available for $35 at Walmart. A colleague who recently purchased it reports that it performs just as well.

With these accessories, I’m all set for a seamless gaming experience on my Nintendo Switch 2!
