Confirming on Wednesday, Amazon relayed its decision to eliminate hundreds of positions in its cloud computing division, AWS, as part of a strategic overhaul.
The tech giant revealed that “a few hundred roles” within the team responsible for physical store technology will be phased out. This transition unfolds shortly after Amazon announced the discontinuation of its ‘Just Walk Out’ technology in American supermarkets.
Amazon also disclosed plans to slash “several hundred roles” within the AWS sales, marketing, and global service organizations. The bulk of these cuts stem from changes in AWS’s training and certification programs as well as sales operations. The company also signaled downsizing in other departments to redirect resources towards different business priorities.
“These decisions, though daunting, are necessary as we persist on investing, hiring, and optimizing resources for the purpose of delivering groundbreaking solutions to our customers,” expressed Amazon spokesperson Duncan Neasham.
This round of layoffs within AWS succeeds a series of job cuts that occurred in Amazon and its subsidiaries earlier this year. In January, the company phased out several hundred positions across its Prime Video and MGM Studios. Concurrently, Twitch, Amazon’s social media platform, eliminated over 500 jobs in a cost-saving initiative. The audio content platform Audible also reported a 5% workforce cut.
