SEATTLE – In a recent announcement, Amazon disclosed its decision to downsize hundreds of positions within its cloud computing sector, AWS, marking a significant shift in strategy.
The company is implementing cuts to “a few hundred roles” within the team in charge of physical store technology. This strategic decision comes on the heels of Amazon’s disclosure to discontinue the use of Just Walk Out technology in American grocery outlets.
Apart from the physical store technology unit, Amazon proclaimed that it’s also reducing “several hundred roles” within the AWS sales, marketing, and global service organization. Predominantly, these cuts are due to modifications in the AWS training, certification programs, and sales operations. Towards focusing on other business priorities, Amazon also acknowledged preparing cuts in other departments.
Bearing attendees to the challenging times marked by these strategic changes, Duncan Neasham, Amazon’s spokesperson, remarked, “These decisions are difficult but necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimize resources to deliver innovation for our customers.”
Furthermore, the layoff spree within AWS follows Amazon’s track record of having made similar restructuring changes earlier this year.
