Suzuki showrooms across Australia are poised for a significant transformation.
News Corp has revealed that the iconic Japanese car manufacturer has halted production on four of its six models—namely the Ignis, Swift Sport, Vitara, and S-Cross. Speculation even suggests that the beloved three-door Jimny could soon be at risk as well.
As it stands, Suzuki’s Australian offerings may soon dwindle to just the Swift Hybrid city vehicle and the Jimny XL 4×4—at least for the time being.
Documents reviewed by this outlet indicate that production has officially ceased for the Ignis, Swift Sport, Vitara, and S-Cross intended for the Australian market. This decisive action is attributed to the impending implementation of new Australian Design Rules (ADR) for imported passenger vehicles, slated to take effect on March 1, 2025.
According to the documents, these models do not comply with ADR 98/00. This regulation mandates that all new vehicles must be equipped with an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, designed to prevent collisions by automatically detecting an imminent forward accident. The system is intended to alert the driver and, if necessary, deploy the brakes to mitigate or avoid a collision entirely: “The system shall automatically detect an imminent forward collision, provide the driver with an appropriate warning, and activate the vehicle braking system to decelerate the vehicle with the purpose of avoiding or mitigating the severity of a collision in the event that the driver does not respond to the warning.”
Fortunately for those interested in these models, the 2024 iterations will still be available until they run out of stock.
However, the fan-favorite three-door Jimny also finds itself under scrutiny, as assessments are reportedly ongoing regarding its potential to incorporate AEB that satisfies ADR requirements. While Suzuki asserts that the Jimny is already fitted with AEB, it’s unclear whether any technical updates will be necessary for the vehicle’s continued availability.
On a brighter note for Suzuki enthusiasts, the brand is preparing to launch a revamped lineup, featuring a range of exciting new models in 2025.
Michael Pachota, general manager of Suzuki Australia, indicated that a substantial shift in the model range is on the horizon over the coming year.
“We’re paving the path for new technologies; Suzuki Australia’s hybrid and electric journey starts now,” he stated.
He referred to a couple of fresh models set to arrive within the next few months—the Fronx compact crossover SUV, which is touted to be “hybrid from the ground up,” and the larger, more versatile Vitara Hybrid, scheduled for release later in 2025.
Additionally, Pachota confirmed that the e-Vitara, a fully electric SUV, will join the lineup, marking Suzuki’s inaugural EV offering in the Australian market.
“Our hybrid products are seeing high demand from both our dealer network and customers,” he remarked. “Our hybrid technology positions Suzukis sold in Australia as some of the most compelling hybrid choices available.”
“Efficiency and cost of ownership remain our forte, and we are unwavering in our commitment to deliver on that promise,” Pachota added.
The updates from Suzuki arrive amid a broader landscape of change affecting numerous auto brands.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia has recently announced the discontinuation of the Pajero Sport seven-seater 4WD, along with the ever-popular ASX small SUV and the turbo- or plug-in hybrid Eclipse Cross.
In a similar vein, the Fiat 500 petrol models, along with the performance-focused Abarth 695, will also bid farewell in the upcoming months.
As this story continues to unfold, we’ll keep you informed with the latest updates should more models encounter challenges with the necessary safety protocols.
