Sony has announced a significant change that will delight PC gamers: you no longer need to link a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play some of its biggest single-player games on PC. In a press release issued on Wednesday, the company revealed that linking a PlayStation Account will now be optional for select titles on PC. This update comes just a day ahead of the highly anticipated release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for the platform.

This development is being celebrated by PC gamers worldwide, particularly in regions where the PlayStation Network is unavailable. Take, for instance, gamers in the Dominican Republic: if you purchased God of War Ragnarök through Steam or Epic Games, you wouldn’t have been able to play it because PSN isn’t accessible in that area. The situation was especially frustrating given that God of War is a single-player experience, devoid of any online or multiplayer features.

In the past, players often resorted to using mods to circumvent the PSN login requirement, but this approach was risky. Modifying game files could lead to serious issues if one wasn’t familiar with the process, which often ended in frustration.

The situation escalated notably with the upcoming release of Helldivers 2 for PC in 2024. The backlash against the mandatory PSN account linking grew so intense that players took to review-bombing the game’s Steam page to voice their discontent. Responding to this outcry, Sony decided to retract the requirement, allowing players to enjoy the online co-op sci-fi shooter without needing a linked PSN account.

From now on, gamers will have the freedom to dive into first-party PlayStation single-player titles on their PCs—including popular games like God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Last of Us Part II Remastered—without the hassle of signing in to a PlayStation Network account. However, it’s worth noting that certain titles, such as Ghost of Tsushima, still require a PSN account for online multiplayer functionality.

For those who choose to link their existing or new PlayStation Network accounts, exclusive perks await, including unique cosmetics and in-game currency. This makes the experience richer for players who want to enhance their gaming journey while giving others the flexibility to play without restrictions.
